A lot of people have a complicated relationship with vaping.
They know they vape more than they want to. They know they probably don't want to be doing it forever. They may even have tried to quit.
But stopping isn't always as simple as deciding to stop.
For some people, vaping replaced something else. Cigarettes. Joints. Stress. Loneliness. Boredom. A ritual that had become woven into everyday life.
And once the habit is established, there isn't necessarily a switch you can flip.
That's where we think something is missing.
I didn't want another lecture. I wanted an alternative.
I remember being the kid in high school who thought smoking looked cool.
Later, cigarettes became something completely different. They became a source of comfort. A familiar ritual that could temporarily soften feelings I didn't really know how to deal with.
Eventually I switched to vaping.
I hesitated for a long time before doing it because I already knew something about myself: if I found something I liked, I could get hooked on it.
And I did.
The strange thing was that vaping solved one problem while creating another.
It was easier to carry around. Easier to use. Easier to hide. And eventually, easier to use constantly.
I remember wishing there were a vape designed specifically for someone who didn't want to become more dependent on vaping.
Not a product trying to convince me that vaping was harmless.
Not another product telling me I needed to quit tomorrow.
Just an alternative that gave me some control.
That's the idea behind Sidepiece.
We don't think every change has to be all-or-nothing.
Think about the other things we manage in our lives.
I can step on a scale and see what happened to my weight.
My watch can tell me how much I've moved today.
A food-tracking app can tell me roughly how much I've eaten.
These tools don't make the decision for me. They give me information and let me decide what to do with it.
Vaping has historically been different.
You can go through an entire day taking puff after puff without ever really knowing how much you've used.
You might think you're having a normal day.
Then you look at the number and realize: I've been vaping all day.
That's the part we wanted to change.
What if you could see the habit?
Sidepiece is built around a simple idea:
You should be able to see and manage your vaping.
Instead of relying entirely on memory or willpower, Sidepiece gives you a way to measure your use and set boundaries around it.
That doesn't mean you have to quit immediately.
Maybe you want to reduce gradually.
Maybe you want to keep your use below a certain amount.
Maybe you want to understand what your normal day actually looks like before deciding what to do about it.
Or maybe you're not ready to change much at all.
That's okay.
The point is to put the information back in your hands.
We originally thought we'd be helping smokers.
When we started working on Sidepiece, we imagined the obvious customer:
Someone who smoked cigarettes and wanted a less disruptive way to consume nicotine.
But something surprised us.
A lot of the people interested in the product weren't former cigarette smokers at all.
They were already vaping.
Some had never been smokers.
They weren't looking for a new way to start vaping.
They were looking for a way to manage something they had already gotten into.
That changed how we thought about Sidepiece.
The problem wasn't simply:
"How do we help smokers switch?"
It was also:
"How do we help people who already vape have more control over the habit?"
I don't necessarily want to vape forever.
That's an important distinction.
You can enjoy something without wanting it to become a permanent part of your life.
Maybe vaping is a phase.
Maybe someday you want to stop completely.
But until then, you might have other things going on.
You have a job.
You have relationships.
You have exercise goals.
You have sleep you don't want to screw up.
You have enough things to think about already.
You may not want to suddenly stop vaping and deal with a major disruption to everything else you're doing.
Maybe what you want is something more gradual:
Vape when you choose to. Know how much you're using. Don't accidentally let the habit take over more of your day than you intended.
That's a very different goal from "quit immediately."
And we think it's a legitimate one.
Sidepiece is not about pretending vaping is healthy.
We're not trying to tell you that vaping is good for you.
We're not trying to make a cigarette, joint, or vape look healthy.
We're interested in a different question:
If someone is going to vape anyway, can technology help them do it more deliberately?
We think it can.
And if having better information and better limits eventually helps someone stop altogether, that's a pretty good outcome too.
More awareness. More control. Less autopilot.
That's what Sidepiece is for.
Peace of mind, right at your side.
